As wind power is becoming increasingly popular across the globe, people in urban environments are seeking to incorporate small wind turbines on rooftops to decrease their reliance on fossil fuels for energy production. The focus of this study was to understand the feasibility of wind turbines on the roof of a building, the JAVITs Convention Center in New York City. More specifically, the study aims to answer the question: how does the location of a wind turbine on a building in an urban setting impact the power it can produce? JAVITs Center has made a commitment to reduce their impact on the environment and has made steady progress towards this goal over the last 10 years. Wind power is a method to achieve this goal that has not been implemented here, so it is an area of interest for further research and feasibility study. The main method for this investigation was using StarCCM Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software to create a model and simulate the conditions at the JAVITs Center to determine wind behavior across the area of interest, using the available wind data, and to visualize these results. The simulation results show that there is good potential for wind production on the roof of JAVITs center if the turbines are placed in optimal locations. The implementation of this green energy technique could help JAVITs to further reach their goals regarding clean energy production and usage.
