Recycling is one of the many actions that can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and conserve natural resources. However, the cost and environmental impact of recycling aluminum is significant, leading to approximately $660 per the transportation and disposal of material, according to a local recycling center in Jackson County, North Carolina. In addition, transportation alone contributes to about 7.078 metric tons of CO2 emissions according to calculations based on general truck emissions, assuming it is done once a month. This calculation does not factor in the energy required to recycle this waste, commonly used with natural gas or other fossil fuels. The question arises: How can we achieve zero-emission recycling while supporting the local economy? This research examines environmentally friendly applications and investigates a solution for solar recycling. Solar recycling aims to implement recycling with little to no carbon footprint and sustainable manufacturing while keeping scalability and affordability in mind. This research looks at using a Fresnel lens to melt aluminum cans using the solar energy provided by the sun. A preliminary prototype has been built to test the Fresnel lens's ability to produce the temperature and heat needed to melt aluminum. Research analyzes the contributing factors and limitations of Fresnel lenses and the recyclability of aluminum. The prototype also looks to implement induction heating to support the inefficiencies of melting non-ferrous metals. From this, we look to implement a way to turn traditional recycling methods of aluminum cans into a zero-emission process that drastically reduces the impact of aluminum cans on the environment. By addressing these challenges, the research aims to provide a scalable solution that can be adopted globally to mitigate the environmental footprint of aluminum recycling. This innovative approach contributes to the sustainability goals and paves the way for further advancements in green technology.
