In the last decades, ESG emerged as a pivotal representation of the inevitable implementation of a wider array of concerns and practices by corporations all over the world. As a representative of the best practices on different aspects of sustainability, this acronym, i.e., what it stands for, gathered the efforts of regulators, politicians, decision makers, managers, employees and people in general to jointly change the direction of business activity and impact in the world. Although questioned, this terminology stood the test of time. But, in recent years, a call for change has emerged. With the upbringing of adjacent and complementary methodologies, it became evident that innovation on the analysis of sustainability concerns must take place in order to meet challenging targets such as 2050s climate neutrally goal in Europe. This study examines the potential of segregating this acronym by analyzing corporate governance separately from the other two verticals that represent Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the consideration of both environmental and social information disclosure. This approach has been increasingly defended by academics, journalists and other important stakeholders on the matter as is thus here put to the test. Results show the potential of several corporate governance arrangements to impact CSR disclosure, namely gender diversity or CSR committees, while also finding both contrary evidence to exiting literature and additional knowledge to the yet not unified impact of certain corporate governance arrangements on sustainability matters.Among other contributions, this work provides the reader a comprehensive understanding of the state of corporate governance in the context of CSR disclosure while at the same time building solid ground for further research, e.g., a sector-specific analysis of the topic.
