To better understand how study-abroad experiences influence faculty and staff's intercultural competence, this qualitative study focused on three main goals: (1) to examine how study-abroad experiences affect faculty and staff's intercultural competence; (2) to examine how participation in high-impact practices modifies faculty and staff perspectives to match those of their students; and (3) to evaluate how the knowledge gained from study-abroad experiences helps faculty and staff create study-abroad programs for students. Participants, faculty, and staff at a large, public research university in the southeastern United States engaged in a professional development program that included a study-abroad component in Costa Rica. The researcher gathered rich qualitative data through interviews, reflective journals, and photographs generated by participants, organizing it around the theoretical framework of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization's intercultural competences tree. The analysis revealed 14 significant themes, highlighting how exposure to different cultures can transform an individual's ability to interact with people from different backgrounds and promote personal and professional development. The study validated fundamental ideas from the intercultural competences tree, such as intercultural literacy, reflexivity, transvaluation, and translation, and introduced concepts like integrative learning, relationship building, shoshin (beginner's mindset), sustainable travel, and shinrin-yoku (forest bathing). Furthermore, a "Study-Abroad Development Guide" was written to support teachers in creating effective study-abroad initiatives that foster intercultural competency and improve academic performance for students. The results broaden our knowledge of how academics and staff can leverage their experiences to create worthwhile, productive study-abroad programs that help students achieve personal and professional objectives.
