PurposeEntrepreneurs have been the focus of extensive studies for many years. Because of their major contributions to innovation and job creation, they are considered critical to the expansion of economies and a catalyst for future sustainability. Nonetheless, they often encounter resource scarcity. On top of that, sustainability problems are complicated and not achieved easily with a single organization. Therefore, implemented cocreation could help entrepreneurs overcome their limitations and achieve their sustainability goals. The study of entrepreneurship co-creation for sustainability is not new, but research in various aspects is limited. As a result, to bridge the gap, this thesis explores the co-creation of entrepreneurship in order to achieve sustainability through the context of social entrepreneurship (SE), university-entrepreneurs collaboration, and cross-border entrepreneurship.LiteratureThis thesis is situated within three social science research domains: entrepreneurship, co-creation, and sustainability. It explores how co-creation can be leveraged to create novel solutions and support sustainability for a better future in several aspects, employing the perspectives of Social Resource-Based View (SRBV) and bounded rationality theory. This is accomplished by first, thoroughly reviewing and analyzing the peer-reviewed literature in order to investigate co-creation among social entrepreneurs (Article 1). Subsequently, Article 2 explores the co-creation between academic institutions and entrepreneurship. Lastly, Article 3 captures a broader perspective on co-creation for sustainability through an examination of cross-border entrepreneurship.Research DesignThis exploratory thesis employs multiple methodologies, starting with a review, moving on to a quantitative research article, and concluding with a qualitative case study method. Article 1 examines the goals, implementation areas, and current research themes of scholars on social entrepreneurship and co-creation through a systematic literature review and co-occurrence analysis. Using Logistic Regression analysis, Article 2 examines the association between university-startup collaborative activities and sustainable development goals. Article 3 employs content analysis to examine the factors, driving forces, co-creation 2 activities, and outcomes of cross-border entrepreneurs who applied co-creation to accomplish their particular sustainable development goals.ResultsThe three papers collectively contribute to advancing the understanding of co-creation in entrepreneurship for sustainability. In Article 1, which delves into the realm of social entrepreneurship, a thorough exploration of co-creation objectives, implementation areas, along with prevalent themes is conducted. This article not only suggests definitions for co-creation and social entrepreneurship that have not yet been agreed upon by academics but also identifies diverse goals and sheds light on influencing factors, including trust, information sharing, and digital technology. Article 2 extends the inquiry to collaborative efforts between startups and universities in Berlin-Brandenburg, uncovering patterns in collaboration among economically, environmentally, and socially motivated entrepreneurs striving to achieve specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Logistic Regression results reveal nuanced collaboration patterns, where economic-focused entrepreneurs engage with professors and product and prototype development, while environmentally focused ones seek assistance from both students and professors, as well as product and prototype developemt. Socially conscious entrepreneurs, however, do not prioritize collaboration with academic institutions for their social goals. Finally, in Article 3, the international perspective is explored, elucidating factors influencing cross-border co-creation for sustainability. The study identifies five categories of influencing elements, with startups predominantly mentioning Market and Cultural Factors as challenges.
