Three interrelated studies were conducted with the common aim of facilitating use of the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) in occupational therapy practice. The first study used cluster analysis of data retrieved from clinical records of 675 mental health service users in the United Kingdom (UK). The analysis identified three natural clusters of service users based on factors related to occupational participation. Membership in one of these occupational clusters was unrelated to membership in one of 19 categories used to determine need for services. The findings indicate the need for individualized assessment to determine the need for occupational therapy services. The second and third studies were based on a survey of therapists in six mental health trusts in the UK. Two hundred sixty-two therapists (61% of the 429 invited to participate) responded. In study two, therapists were asked to give their expert opinion about the appropriateness of occupational aims for service users at three different levels of occupational functioning. This study resulted in a hierarchy of occupational aims ranked from easiest to hardest. It also identified aims which were considered most appropriate for clients at different levels of functioning. The third study documented the positive impact of therapists' use of MOHO on a range of clinical and professional outcomes. The study also identified factors that were related to therapists' extent of adoption of this model in everyday practice. Findings from the first two studies contributed to the creation of mental health care pathways in England. They explored new avenues and will serve as exemplars for future research contributing to the development of care pathways. The third study built upon previous research that has examined the impact of using MOHO on practice processes and outcomes. The study also shed light on how professional development efforts may influence the extent of MOHO use in practice.
