The phenomenological study explored the lived experience of learning clinical reasoning skills by 21 occupational therapy students as they progressed through two semesters of study. The purpose was to identify learning patterns helpful to educational leaders preparing entry-level clinicians. Analysis of pre- and post-semester structured interviews and two semesters of seminar session tapes was accomplished using inductive methods and interpreted within the context of occupational therapy education. Five themes were gleaned from the data. The emergence of (a) therapist voices, and (b) client focus were identified based on students' descriptions of their understanding of selected clinical reasoning concepts. The emergence of (c) recursive discussion, (d) streamlined processes, and (e) case-by-case variation were identified based on analysis of student discussion during seminar classes. The emergent interpretations were described and analyzed for patterns of meaning in context. Emerging themes were synthesized with implications for education, health care, and occupational therapy.
