The purpose of this study was to determine if raw Functional Independence Measure (FIM$\\rm\\sp{TM}$ instrument) scores at rehabilitation admission were a more accurate predictor of length of stay (LOS) in a rehabilitation facility for adult patients with burns than Rasch converted FIM$\\rm\\sp{TM}$ measures. The Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation (UDS scMR$\\rm\\sp{SM}$) provided the FIM$\\rm\\sp{TM}$ scores and LOS data for this study of patients with burns. The results showed that raw admission FIM$\\rm\\sp{TM}$ scores were a better predictor of LOS than Rasch-converted FIM$\\rm\\sp{TM}$ measures. This indicates that the FIM$\\rm\\sp{TM}$ can be used in its original form and that more research is needed to determine if Rasch analysis is necessary for converting original scores into interval measures for functional assessment.
