Older adults are at risk for experiencing a deterioration in their quality of living as their responsibilities related to work and family often diminish (Mann, Edwards, & Baum, 1986). Occupational therapy practitioners are dedicated to enhancing life quality, and do so by fostering a balance of meaningful work, self-care and leisure activity. Prior studies have not investigated volunteer work and its possible impact on the elderly's perceived quality of life, nor have they addressed volunteer activities that are meaningful to those in residential facilities. The present study compared perceived quality of life scores of 19 elderly volunteers and 17 nonvolunteers living in a retirement community. Participants completed the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), and a demographic/meaningful work survey designed by the researcher. Results revealed that of the eight quality of life areas assessed, only the vitality scale demonstrated a statistically significant difference between groups, with volunteers scoring higher. Although not statistically significant, volunteers' scores were higher than nonvolunteers in all areas, with exception to the bodily pain scale. Volunteer activities most commonly noted as meaningful were those directly related to helping other people.
