The literature illustrates the multiplicity of meanings of moral conceptualizations of leadership (Burns, 1978; Foster, 1986; Maxcy, 1991; and Sergiovanni, 1992). However, these moral conceptions of leadership lack demonstrative connection to empirical data from actual practice (Miron, 1991). This study investigated morality in the practice of school leadership by posing two research questions: (1) What are the values and morals that are expressed in the language/actions of the school community?, and (2) Are the eight features of critical pragmatism evident in the discourse of administrators, teachers, and students in an urban school setting? Since critical pragmatism (Maxcy, 1991, 1995) links components of transformational leadership (Burns, 1978), value-inclusive leadership (Hodgkinson, 1991), critical leadership (Foster, 1986), and voice (Fine, 1989), it was used as a method to understand the moral aspect of school leadership. The analysis included interviews of school administrators, audio taped interactions of a principal and faculty, and student interviews from a large southern urban school context. The findings demonstrated the multiplicity of values in these urban schools. Administrators expressed caring, justice, and moral responsibility. Student values related to justice, achievement, behavior, and society. In the interactions, actions were guided by personal, professional, and pragmatic values in one situation, and educational and democratic values in another. The features and process values of critical pragmatism indicated a distinct climate for change. The analysis demonstrated that democratic school communities were interpersonal and situational, that communications were aligned with organizational goals, rather than individuals' needs, and that aesthetic discussions of school life were rare. This study concluded that morality in the practice of school leadership is shaped by moral values engaged in democratic processes. Morality affects practice within the context of specific interactions around educational issues. Interactions must involve truthful, honest communication and fair treatment of adults and children. School leaders must consider the multiplicities of values, voices, and venue, to develop more dynamic and moral strategies of school leadership.
