Stag beetles are one of the animal families with the most impressive weaponry for their body size: males bear jaws that grow to be as long as their own body. They challenge each other with these jaws in aggressive fights over matings with females. We found extreme adaptations of the male body for battle performance. Due to enormous muscles, they generate bite forces of more than 500 times their own body weight. To prevent breaking their own jaws in fights, male stag beetles have a reinforced jaw anatomy with a triangular base and hundreds of small sensors. However, the heavy armature comes at a large cost: its weight increases the energetic costs of running and flying by 40% and 26%, respectively. Moreover, their heavy head makes running males instable, and tends to topple them over. Stag beetles are also instable when they lift their rival above their head in battles. To avoid tumbling over, the claws at the end of their legs have an enhanced anatomy. Compared to the high cost of carrying the weight of the armature, the influence of the shape and size (as such) of the weaponry on the cost of flight is absolutely negligible. This provided freedom to evolve elaborate jaws, and is probably one of the causes of the stunningly large jaw diversity that characterises the stag beetle family.
