The purpose of this study was to describe the impact of teaching about genre with elementary students on their book preference and selection. Young students may be unaware of various text genres or have not been exposed to different genres to develop a preference. To study how genre instruction impacted how students select books and their motivation to read, a within-subjects, action research study was designed. It was found that when taught various genres, students choose books differently and explored a wider variety of genre types. This suggests that genre instruction in the library is important to help students read widely and to increase their motivation.
