Family poverty has continuously shown to have negative and deleterious effects on caregivers and their children (Hodgkinson, Godoy, Beers, Lewin & 2017). The impacts of poverty on various negative outcomes (ex: mental health challenges, school failure, alcohol and substance abuse, and teenage pregnancy), are greatly transmitted by dangerous environments, especially the family (Van Ryzin, Fishbein, Biglan, 2018). Family poverty has also been shown to increase unfavorable life circumstances, to produce more distress in the mother-child connection and decreases positive caregiver approaches such as reading and reviewing shapes, letters, or numbers with their children in comparison to higher earning mothers (Baker, Kainz, Reynolds, 2018). The inescapable internalization of one's external values and systems (i.e., racism, classism, and poverty) and their presence in mental health treatment calls for a serious exploration of the utility of these systems.Due to low-income caregivers already having an increased chance of developing depression, poor coping skills, poorer parent child relationships, and harsh disciplinary practices by proxy of living in poverty, it is invaluable for marriage and family therapists to understand how participating in larger macros systems (education, health, public policy, & government assistance, etc.) also impact disadvantaged caregivers sense of self, mental health, and parent child relationships (Katz et al., 2017). This study utilizes a phenomenological qualitative design to explore low-income caregivers' experiences on government assistance. This study also investigated caregivers' perceptions about being on government assistance. Findings from this study were explored and discussed through a Critical Race Theory framework.
