A tellurorhodamine chromophore having a xanthylium core and a mesityl group attached at the C-9 position (Te(II) mesi dye) was used in this present study to investigate the photophysical and electrochemical characteristics during its oxidation from +2 to +4 state. The photo-oxidation of this dye at pH 6 in 75% methanol / 25% water medium stabilized with acetic acid yielded telluroxide and this could be observed using UV-visible spectroscopy. Further characterization of the isolated Te(IV) mesityl xanthylium dye (Te(IV) mesiO dye) was carried out using 1H NMR spectroscopy and FTIR studies. The photocatalytic cycle proposed for this oxidation suggests that the reaction of the Te(II) mesi dye with singlet oxygen and water liberates hydrogen peroxide and that evolution was observed using NaI titration. Chemical oxidation of Te(II) mesi dye was carried out using hydrogen peroxide where it yielded the Te(IV) mesiO dye spontaneously. The bromination and halogenation of the Te(II) dye in ambient temperature showed the spectral changes in UV visible spectroscopy denoting the oxidative addition of halogen on Te atom. They were further characterized using 1H NMR spectroscopy and FTIR studies. Cyclic voltammetry, spectroelectrochemical studies and bulk electrolysis experiments were carried out on Te(II) mesi dye and Te(IV) mesiO dye to study the oxidation-reduction events taking place and the absorbance band changes in UV-visible spectroscopy with the change in potentials were used to identify the possibilities for the associated transient chemical species in the redox events.
