The purpose of the qualitative descriptive study is to research how older adults living in the southeastern United States describe their personal, emotional, and social comfort, accomplishments from their social media use. The problem statement: It is not known how older adults describe their personal, emotional, and social comfort, accomplishments from their social media use inspired the theoretical foundation from Bandura's self-efficacy theory. The three RQs focused on how older adults describe personal (RQ1), emotional (RQ2), and social (RQ3) comfort, accomplishments from their social media use. The sample of 25 ranged between 50-years-old and 68-years-old and reside in the southeastern U.S., specifically 23 live in Georgia, one live in Alabama, and one live in South Carolina. Also, the study included 19 African Americans and six Caucasian Americans. Data analyzed from 15 semi-structured interviews and two 5-participant focus groups revealed rich descriptive data that included 1,638 sub-codes and 4 clustered codes including like - 584 sub-codes, learned - 241 sub-codes, engagement - 460 sub-codes, and feel - 353 sub-codes. The descriptive data allowed for three themes to be revealed: 1. older adults who use SMS describe feeling empowered because they can use SMS as a communications tool and an educational tool, 2. older adults who use SMS describe feeling emotionally engaged because their experiences are informative and entertaining, and 3. older adults who use SMS describe feeling socially connected because they can use SMS as a learning tool and an inspirational tool. To conclude: the sample described their comfort level has increased and they feel more accomplished in their endeavors because of their SMS use.
