With the advancement of renewable energy and the ever-increasing demand for energy in various applications, there is a critical need for energy storage devices that offer both high energy density and power density. As the energy density of current commercial lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) approaches their theoretical limits, alternative energy storage technologies are required to meet future needs. In this work, two promising types of energy storage devices are investigated: rechargeable lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries using sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) cathodes, and Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors. For Li-S batteries, SPAN has emerged as a promising sulfur cathode material that effectively addresses the challenge of polysulfide dissolution during cycling. SPAN can deliver a specific capacity exceeding 650 mAh/g, and demonstrates high energy efficiency, long cycle life, and operation without the need for excess electrolyte. However, its main drawbacks are low electrochemical potential and poor electrical conductivity. To overcome these limitations and fabricate a highly conductive cathode, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are mixed with SPAN powder. And the cell performance by using different content of CNTs in the cathode will be studied. In the work of Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors, the zinc anode offers several advantages, including a high specific capacity (~819 mAh/g), low redox potential, and natural abundance. A theoretical model for specific energy based on the active materials involved in charge transfer is derived. Experiments reveal a stable voltage below 1.5 V, primarily due to side reactions and Zn dendrite growth, which degrade performance and shorten cycle life and remain key challenges limiting practical application.
