In recent years, Florida has passed a series of laws that seek to regulate what materials should or should not be allowed on public school library shelves and expand the scope of who is empowered to make those decisions. The increase in challenges to diverse materials in Florida and nationwide raises questions regarding how the laws may exacerbate self-censorship practices among school librarians. Moreover, because the extent to which diverse and potentially controversial materials have been the subject of censorship attempts is unprecedented in modern times, this research fills a gap that exists regarding the challenges faced by school librarians in Florida and how they are navigating the intersection of law, professional responsibilities, and the constitutionally protected right of their students to access materials that represent the range of experiences emanating from diverse communities, cultures, and varying perspectives.Informed by Noelle-Neumann's Spiral of Silence Theory, this research utilizes a mixed-methods approach consisting of surveys of 49 participants and semi-structured interviews with nine current or recent Florida school librarians to explore factors that influence increased self-censorship and factors that mitigate Florida school librarians' fear of isolation from important social groups. Additionally, Florida school librarians' perceptions of controversiality and the extent to which they are aware of laws and court rulings pertinent to their profession and students' intellectual freedom are explored along with practical strategies Florida school librarians have employed to manage an increasingly restrictive legal environment.Despite a large majority of survey respondents indicating that they engage in self-censorship by avoiding the collection of titles that could potentially engender controversy, the findings suggest that the willingness of Florida school librarians to protect the integrity of their selection practices and library collections is noticeably enhanced by several factors including positive and productive relationships with their districts, administrations, and most notably, their principals, the extent to which they cultivate relationships with supportive or like-minded individuals and organizations, perceptions that their communities lean to the liberal side of the sociopolitical spectrum, a strong understanding of the parameters of state law, and the extent of their belief in the inherent value of the challenged title(s).
