In this dissertation I investigate how people form relationships with places in dynamic landscapes, focusing on the monumental center of Chupacoto in Huaylas, Peru that began its formation during the Late Preceramic (Third millennium BCE) and continued to be occupied and reoccupied through the Late Intermediate Period (Second millennium CE). In the Peruvian Andes, monumental architecture emerged during the Late Preceramic period (3000-1800 BCE) and has persisted in various forms to the present day. Despite their apparent permanence, these ancient sites are the result of dynamic, interactive processes of construction and transformation. These changes are intertwined with alterations in the surrounding landscape, reflecting a reciprocal relationship. My dissertation traces the transformations of Chupacoto and its broader landscape using a multi-scalar and multi-temporal approach. Initially, I characterize the regional dynamics of the Callejon de Huaylas, summarizing the social and environmental aspects of landscapes over time. I then examine local dynamics within the Huaylas River valley, before focusing on Chupacoto's construction during its occupation periods from the Late Preceramic (3000-1800 BCE) through the Late Intermediate Period (1000-1450 CE). I present evidence of the changing social and environmental conditions throughout different periods of Chupacoto's occupation and consider how these changes would influence how site builders and Huaylas occupants experienced and contributed to the making and remaking of their landscapes through architectural construction. Theoretically, this case study challenges rigid distinctions between past, present, and future, rupture and continuity, and stability and change. It demonstrates that relationships between landscape and placemaking are interconnected and constantly evolving. This is evident in the many ways that Chupacoto persists as a place of human activity throughout multiple occupation periods, acting as a place where humans encounter past landscapes, create present landscapes and negotiate their potential futures.
