The housing complex popularly known as Villa Olimpica was one of the many block-type housing solutions built in Chile between the 1950s and 1970s. Villa Olimpica was constructed by the Chilean Housing Corporation (in Spanish, Corporacion de la Vivienda, CORVI) to accommodate middle-class workers and their families from the Metropolitan Region and various areas of the country who arrived in Santiago to work in public institutions. In my research, I analyze the performances of citizenship exercised by the residents of Villa Olimpica in the built space; this built space is examined from three perspectives. Firstly, from a macro perspective, as Villa Olimpica is conceived within a master urban modernization plan at the national level in the context of the Cold War, and its relationship with the National Stadium, understood as another urban landmark key to understanding the history and urbanization of Santiago. Secondly, the mezzo perspective corresponds to the everyday life of the villa, and specifically the history and spatial relationships of a particular block. For this, studying the creation of the garden and the installation of fences is essential to understand the identity formation that neighbors has forged over time. Lastly, I incorporate an intimate perspective of the home, where the focus is on my grandmother's altar. There, I qualitatively analyze the photographs and figures the altar contains, as well as the oral histories of neighbors from the Villa from an exploratory quantitative study, using natural language processing methods. With these three perspectives, I argue that Villa Olimpica is a critical place in Santiago de Chile, to understand how alternative geographies to those proposed by modernity generate discontent and accommodations in urban space, straining relations between the State and citizenship, between the official and the unofficial. My study contributes to the creation of academic literature about Villa Olimpica, for which there is a historical debt of recognition to its space and neighbors, as well as a reflection on the urban space of Santiago from an interdisciplinary viewpoint.
