This qualitative research sought to examine the pop cultural phenomenon of selfidentifying as a "bad bitch." Hip hop feminism and sexual script theory were employed to explore how popular women rappers are defining and performing as the bad bitch today. Interdisciplinary literature on popular music, rap music, race, gender and representations of women in rap music are provided to support this study's investigation of the construction of the bad bitch, its relation to Amber Rose's (2015) 12 components to being a bad bitch and, comparatively, Stephen and Phillips' (2003) eight hip hop sexual scripts. A semiotic textual analysis of 25 music videos of popular songs by Black and Latina women rappers from 2015 to 2023 was conducted to uncover how these women conceptualize the bad bitch and how they perform being a bad bitch. A thematic analysis of the collected data generated six themes: (1) attitude, (2) looks, (3) rich, (4) relationships, (5) sex & sexuality and (6) life's a party. Additionally, these six themes suggest that the bad bitch sexual script adopts various elements from previous hip hop sexual scripts while completely rejecting others to create a unique, but formulaic, gender role proven to be successful in popular culture and rap music. Ultimately, the bad bitch sexual script is a complicated set of beliefs, rules and expectations for women rappers to be pretty, thick, sexy, sexual, rich, well-connected, dangerous, multitalented, braggadociously self-confident, strong-minded and fun-loving. As such, the contradictory cultural norms the bad bitch functions in results in a sexual script whose beliefs and behaviors are constantly putting hegemony and counter hegemony at odds, hence being bad.
