Strongly correlated and itinerant electrons coexist in a wide class of materials like infinite-layer nickelate superconductors and heavy-fermion systems. In this thesis, I will present numerical studies of a minimal bilayer Hubbard model with a nearly half-filled interacting layer and a non-interacting layer to explore the relevant physics in two dimensions. In the hope of describing the infinite-layer nickelates, I will present the results obtained by a numerically exact approach, determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC), of the case with dilute itinerant electrons doped from the interacting layer. The results qualitatively agree with experimental observations of the undoped compounds and suggest that Kondo singlets characterize the low-energy physics. I will also discuss the strong-coupling regime with a nearly half-filled itinerant layer. Both DQMC simulations of the model and a mean-field study of its effective model (the Kondo-Heisenberg model) suggest that the vicinity of the Kondo insulating phase could be a promising place for the emergence of exotic superconducting phases, such as pair-density waves.
