The growing concern for a more sustainable future has brought along an expanding interest in the transition towards a circular economy and the development of environmentally-focused innovation. In what concerns policy implementation, these two drivers of sustainability often appear as complementary to one another. Within such context, this thesis aims to analyze the performance of European countries in terms of both eco-innovation and circular economy results. Four composite indexes developed by the European Commission were used as a starting point for the analysis: one measuring eco-innovation - the eco-innovation index - and three measuring different dimensions of initiatives towards a more circular economy - sustainable resource management, societal behavior, and business operations. The main target is to identify behavioral patterns both in terms of each index's individual composition and of the global interaction of the indexes' final scores. Several analytical methods were applied to achieve such an end, namely correlation analysis, principal component analysis, linear regression models, and hierarchical k-means clustering. When disassembling the variables composing each of the final indicators, the results allowed for the identification of the main factors currently inciting better overall index performance, whilst also taking into consideration the remaining variables' influence throughout the analysis. Regarding the main indicators' interaction, no significant associations were found between the three considered CE pillars. On the other hand, results suggest that countries that do better in terms of eco-innovation frequently show better performance in terms of sustainable resource management, and a positive relationship with the business operations pillar is also to be highlighted.
