Accurate aircraft-based measurements of atmospheric composition require well characterized inlets for sampling aerosol and gas. While aerosol inlets have been studied widely, there is limited understanding of gas inlets. Traditionally, gas-phase sampling from aircraft is made using a rear-facing inlet that ensures that aerosol particles are largely not sampled because of their inertia. Such inlets largely sample gas from the boundary layer of the external structure and the samples are likely to be compromised or contaminated. In this thesis, the performance of two inlet designs - one side-facing and another forward-facing - is analyzed for a range of aircraft conditions. The inlet designs are presented and their particle and gas sampling characteristics are established using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling considering the conditions of flow compressibility, non-continuum particle drag, and gas turbulence. The CFD predictions are validated with wind-tunnel measurements made in the US Airforce high speed wind-tunnel in Fort Collins, Colorado. Additionally, we model the fate of sampled gas and particles through downstream transport sections, including pressure reduction sections, to characterize full system response and validate these predictions using experiments. The validated modeling results are used as a simulation database to predict inlet performance as a function of aircraft operating conditions. The model allows for accurate accounting of sampling performance to characterize the atmosphere and helps improve our ability to determine the role of trace gases and aerosol in our changing climate.
