This dissertation researched the subject of employee retention and how organizations can engage employees to prevent high employee turnover. The subject is a current national trend captured by research organizations such as Gallup. Engagement of employees and long-term retention of millennial staff by employers is also a major issue among aerospace employers. In the defense industry, national security could be at risk if a new generation cannot keep and use the knowledge of the large retiring baby boom generation. As a result, it is important to create culture and benefits to better retain employees.A primary way to retain millennial employees, based on the literature, is to change the culture to one that is attractive to multiple generations and diverse workforces and offer benefits that appeal to multiple generations. This would include understanding and celebrating diversity and the values shared by younger generations such as millennials and diverse groups across racial and ethnic groups, gender and sexual orientation.Another major way to retain shorter tenured millennial employees is to offer benefits that make the employer attractive. This could include work/life balance programs, opportunities for growth such as varied assignments, continuing education, profit sharing and pensions which change employee's behavior, so they want to stay.Understanding the need for culture change and implementing useful change will help employers to retain engaged employees over the long run.
