The aim of this thesis is to create a biography of Juana Frances, situating her in the historical context of her time (1924-1990); to periodize her work and to study in detail, analyse and critique her compositions. It is also to study how she carried out the creative process, her studios, her work habits and the techniques that she employed in her art work. To find out how her work was affected by cultural and social influences throughout her life and to take a journey through Spain from the fifties to the nineties through her art work. The topic is the creative processes of Juana Frances, the distinctive moments of her trajectory, changes, divisions between stages, and the main thread that unites all of her work. It will examine her technical and discursive coherence in her objective phases as well as in her subjective ones. For this work, interviews have been carried out with the people that surrounded her in these circles; friends, fellow students, members of 'El Paso', artists, gallery staff and relatives. Many types of documents have been utilized; personal writings, letters, photographs, books, catalogues, articles about her work and her exhibitions carried out in various countries. Juana Frances was a prolific painter. When she passed away, a large amount of her work was given to four museums: The museum of contemporary art in Alicante, The Valencian institute of modern art, The Reina Sofia central national museum of art in Madrid and the Pablo Serrano museum in Zaragoza. All of this work has been analysed as well as the work belonging to the artists family, art galleries, institutions and private collections. In total 383 works of art have been catalogued; engravings, drawings, paintings and constructions. All of this work has been divided up to be studied and catalogued in the following phases: Formation, Figurative stage, Informalism, The man and the city, Submarine depths and Comets. The work shows us a highly intellectual artist, preoccupied with the changes that are necessary at a creative and socio-political level. She studied in the San Fernando academy of fine arts in Madrid, won prizes and grants, and later travelled to find out about various museums, artistic trends and other cultures. She was a founder of the group 'El Paso' which has had most influential over artistic changes. She also worked with other artistic collectives. She married the sculptor Pablo Serrano and was president of his foundation in Zaragoza.
