The exponential development of smartphones technology embraces medical science to precede tocure a wider array of patients with a more effective cost. Microscopy is a field that has evolved aswell with this technology. With the addition of motorized stages in microscopes, it simplified thestrenuous task of analysis of blood samples infected with parasites. These systems come with anexpensive price tag and specialized staff. Thus, Fraunhofer AICOS proved possible the creation ofa 3D-Printed intelligent Microscope that allowed for the autonomous acquisition of images usinga smartphone at a very low cost that could be easily reproducible in developing countries. In thisthesis, the goal is to show how a new solution that can achieve a broader field of view (FOV) andmore stable behavior of the motors while maintaining a lean attitude and low cost.To accomplish this goal, methodologies of design for manufacturing (DFM) and design forassembly (DFA) were used. Armed with these mindsets it is possible to create a device that is easyto assemble, which requires few tools and it is optimized for manufacturing. With the presence ofadditive manufacturing, technologies such as fused deposition modeling (FDM) and stereolithography (SLA) were used to prototype the device while it evolved in the typical development pipelineof a product. As such, it was also asked if a 3D printed prototype can accurately represent the finalproduct that requires excellent precision and mechanical properties. This concept was exploredwith the design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) and tensile test to better have a design insighton the influence of infill density and wall count on cost and mechanical properties. To optimize different parts and validate the structure, finite element analysis was used. ABAQUSwas used to better understand the behavior of different structural parts. This software was also usedto compare the behavior between Alucobond®, a novel sandwich solution, and an aluminum plate.Solidworks was used to better reproduce different case studies by using the topology optimizationalgorithm. The main goal is to use this algorithm as design insight to faster design optimize parts. Finally, a cost analysis was proceeded to decide between the different presented solutions. Itwas observed that the solution that uses a PMI stage is the one worth exploring and advancing tothe production stage. The total cost of this solution is 1050C, being this lower than the solutionspresented in the market, and it is expected that different supply deals will greatly decrease thetotal cost of the device. It was concluded that 3D printing can be used to reproduce this devicewhile saving significantly on development time. The assembly process was also improved greatly. However, it was also observed in some room for future improvement.
