There is an ongoing push to replace commodity, petroleum derived, plastics in efforts to reduce carbon footprint and plastic pollution. Natural products offer an appealing alternative to petroleum derivatives as they access renewable feedstocks, typically have mild degradation mechanisms, and rarely have toxic degradation byproducts. However, these naturally derived polymer systems often lack advanced functionalities, such as 4D behavior, electrical conductivity, and ability to leverage advanced manufacturing methods such as additive manufacturing. Though the use of various methods such as strategic monomer selection, carbon-carbon double bond stereochemistry, and material composition have shown promise in yielding advanced material systems, they seldom are used in tandem which limits overall capability in performance and creativity. This work presents a synergistic way of controlling stereochemistry and material composition to tailor material properties and achieve advanced functionalities without sacrificing the green nature of the polymer systems.
