Approximately 30 years ago, coastal upwelling regions found along the eastern margins of ocean basins were proposed to be significant and underappreciated sources of nitrous oxide (N2O; Bange et al. 1996). N2O is a powerful greenhouse gas and the most prominent chemical agent contributing to the depletion of stratospheric ozone (Crutzen, 1970; Ravishankara et al., 2009). Since the industrial revolution, the atmospheric partial pressure of N2O has increased from approximately 280ppb to 338ppb as of October, 2024, overwhelmingly due to land use change and industrialization (Thompson et al., 2019; Tian et al., 2024). Today, it is estimated that the ocean comprises up to 30% of all N2O emissions to the atmosphere, and coastal upwelling regions are recognized as primary sources of oceanic N2O (Tian et al., 2024; Yang et al., 2020). Found within most eastern boundary upwelling regions are oxygen deficient zones (ODZs) - areas that incur persistent subsurface anoxia due to slow ventilation coupled to high rates of microbial respiration - that comprise less than 1% of the global ocean volume, but are responsible for the greatest concentrated sources of N2O from the ocean (Karstensen et al., 2008; Landolfi et al., 2017; Yang et al., 2020). Despite knowing whereN2O is being significantly produced, consumed, and released to the atmosphere, great uncertainty remains regarding whatshapes the distribution of N2O in the ocean (Codispoti, 2010; Martinez-Rey et al., 2015; Nevison et al., 1995, p. 199, 2004; Yang et al., 2020; Zamora & Oschlies, 2014). Overall, there is a dearth of N2O data in the ocean (Bange et al., 2019) - let alone N2O isotopic data - and this dissertation seeks to harness new measurements of N2O isotopes in previously understudied areas to further our understand of N2O production, consumption, and transport within eastern boundary upwelling regions. The chemical, physical, and biological properties of eastern boundary coastal upwelling regions are modulated by strong communication of subsurface waters with the atmosphere during active upwelling, high primary productivity, and inter- and intra-annual physical dynamics (Checkley & Barth, 2009; Tarazona & Arntz, 2001). These complex interactions in upwelling regions make constraining N2O cycling and emissions a challenge (Battaglia & Joos, 2018; McCoy et al., 2023; Yang et al., 2017, 2020). In the ocean, N2O is primarily formed as a microbial byproduct or intermediate in both oxygenated and anoxic waters and is consumed by microbial processes in suboxic to anoxic waters (Bianchi et al., 2012; Codispoti & Christensen, 1985; Elkins et al., 1978; Ji et al., 2018; Sun et al., 2020; Suntharalingam & Sarmiento, 2000). Because of the overlap of environmental conditions where these production and consumption processes occur, especially in hypoxic to anoxic waters, constraining the relative contributions of each pathway is made even more difficult (Battaglia & Joos, 2018; Martinez-Rey et al., 2015). Additionally, the cycling and transport of N2O is highly sensitive to environmental conditions in the ocean such as deoxygenation (Breitburg et al., 2018; Horak et al., 2016; Schmidtko et al., 2017), acidification (Beman et al., 2011; Breider et al., 2019; Frame et al., 2017; Rees et al., 2016), enhanced occurrence and intensity of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO; Babbin et al., 2020; Cai et al., 2014, 2015; Ji et al., 2019; Yang et al., 2017), and alteration of currents and water masses (Bograd et al., 2008; Meinvielle & Johnson, 2013; Mogollon & Calil, 2017; Thomson & Krassovski, 2010).
