The ferroquadrupole order of local 4f atomic orbitals in the magnetic insulator TmVO4 provides a local-moment realization of the nematic order for which the underlying Hamiltonian is well-established. This model material system enables us to explore several important open questions about the equilibrium properties and dynamics of nematic materials which have important implications beyond just this specific case. This thesis document presents a quantitative experimental study of TmVO4and the closely related magnetic analog YbVO4, including exploring slow dynamics at low temperatures and the effects of disorder induced by chemical substitutions. The following chapters record measurement principles and new experimental methods that focus on probing magnetization and temperature response to AC fields as a means to investigate complex magnetization dynamics, as well as higher-order multipole dynamics. From an experimental technique perspective, Chapters 2 and 3 introduce a new device setup of the AC magnetocaloric effect, which is complementary to AC susceptibility measurements. The combination of the two chapters describes a framework to understand the magneto-thermal response within these materials for both types of measurement. First, a new set of instrument development is established based on the measurement of GdVO4, for which crystal field effects are nominally absent, providing a more straightforward case for which a thermal transport process explains the observation of magneto-thermal relaxation. A detailed experimental tutorial included in the two chapters gives researchers an opportunity to efficiently understand and establish similar measurements in standard material research facilities, which have access to analog electronics, magnetic fields, and low-temperature equipment. The measurements and analysis in Chapter 5 reveal that the dissipation is characterized by a single intrinsic time constant for the magnetic case (YbVO4). In contrast, the quadrupolar material (TmVO4) in Chapter 6 exhibits a range of relaxation times, indicative of glassy behavior, that is tentatively ascribed to the quadrupolar degrees of freedom.
