Background: Scapulohumeral rhythm is dependent on the trapezius muscle complex and serratus anterior actions to efficiently move the scapula on the thoracic cage. Dry needling (DN) to reduce muscle tone has been widely researched and recently shown to improve motor control. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to observe the effects of DN to the upper trapezius (UT) on muscle tone and activation ratio between the UT and lower trapezius (LT) muscles. Methods: Noraxon Ultium Inertial Motion Units (IMUs) were placed over the posterior acromion, spinous process of T1, and deltoid insertion to capture scapular kinematics. Noraxon Ultium-wireless EMG sensors were placed on the muscle bellies of the UT and LT to capture muscle activation. MyotonPro was used to measure UT tone pre- and post- DN. Subjects performed six repetitions of shoulder scaption at (6°/s) to measure scapular kinematics. With subjects supine, one needle was inserted into the dominant UT muscle and pistoned until a twitch response was observed or two minutes had passed. Results: Thirteen asymptomatic, healthy subjects participated in the study. A two-sample T-test revealed no statistically significant differences in dominant UT tone (p=0.95), dominant scapular upward rotation (p=0.95), or UT LT muscle activation ratio (p=0.97). Discussion/Conclusions: Data collected did not support the initial hypothesis; however, trends in muscle tone and activation were noted among participants. Following intervention, 62% of participants showed a decrease in dominant UT tone and 69% had a minimal decrease in UT muscle activation.
