Background:As we known All forms of physical activities may improve pulmonary functions. Lung size may increase by strenuous and prolonged strength training & significant difference in pulmonary functions is found among different types of athletic training. Recent studies have shown that FVC, FEV1, FEV3, PEFR and FEV1/FVC ratio were higher in athletes than in the normal sedentary control individuals. Some studies say that athletes may show lower values of dynamic pulmonary function tests while some show higher values of dynamic pulmonary function tests. Hence the study is undertaken to know the lung function in athletes of BengaluruObjective:To record dynamic pulmonary function tests (FVC, FEV1 & FEV1/FVC) using COSMED computerized spirometer in athletes and to compare with non athletesMethods:A Case control study done on 50 non-smoking athletes in the age group of 18 to 25 years (including both males and females) from Shree Kanteerva stadium, Bangalore and 50 non athletes as control group after considering inclusion and exclusion criteria. Subjects will be matched for age and gender. FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, PEFR were recorded using COSMED computerized spirometer. Independent Student's t-test was used for statistical analysis. Results:FVC, FEV1 & FEV1/FVC, PEFR (P <0.001) were significantly increased in athletes than non athletesFEF25-75% values (P =0.008) were increased in athletes than non athletesInterpretation & Conclusion:Regular exercise or athletic training will improve the lung function tests.
