The growth of online shopping has been a global trend throughout the apparel industry. With two prominent forms of online shopping being undertaken, mainly; e-commerce (through desktop computer or laptops), and m-commerce (either through mobile web browsers or mobile apps). The individuals within South Africa (and globally) who use mobile apps the most have been identified as the more youthful segment of Generation Y (aged from 19 to 39 years). Coupled with this, male Generation Y was identified as the more frequent user of technology, and more specifically mobile apps in comparison to their female counterparts. While the menwears industry had begun to feature more prominently within the fashion space because of the keen interest and expenditure on menswear items coming from Generation Y males. An understanding of a consumers technology adoption and consumer decision making process is highy important in an online purchasing space. The study subsequently made use of a combined technology acceptance model (TAM) and theory of planned behaviour (TPB) model to use the strengths of each model to provide a better understanding of both technology adoption and consumer behaviour. The study also took into consideration the innovativeness of each individual as newer technology tends to be used more by those that are more innovative, while also taking into consideration the influence of South Africa's collectivist culture. The focus of the study was thus on the behavioural intention of Generation Y males to purchase mens apparel through the use of mobile apps.A descriptive research design was undertaken whereby data was collected using a predetermined questionnaire. Respondents were required to be South African citizens living within Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni or Tshwane, identify as male, from age 19 to 39 years old and had either browsed, or purchased menswear items in the past six months. A total of 633 responses were gathered, collated, checked and entered into the software program SPSS for analysis. Of the 633 responses 575 were then used for Model A (behavioural intention) and 310 were used for Model B (actual use). A combination of descriptive and inferential statistics were then used to analyse the data, whereby structural equation modelling (SEM) was the main statistical technique used for both Model A and Model B to test the hypotheses set out for the study. The outcome of the structural equation modelling for both Model A and Model B provides a good indication of the behavioural intention of Generation Y males in the use of mobile apps to purchase menswear items. Perceived usefulness (PU) was found to have a positive relationship with both behavioural intention (BI) and attitude, perceived ease-of-use (PEOU) was found to have a positive relationship with both PU and attitude, innovativeness was found to have a positive relationship with PU and PEOU, and attitude was found to be the strongest influencer of Generation Y males BI to use mobile apps to purchase menswear items. The findings of the study led to twenty nine recommendations and twenty six strategies being made to South African apparel retailers in order for them to improve their own business strategies and focus.
