Freshwater ecosystems play a critical role in global nutrient cycling. Across spatial scales, elemental composition of organisms and ecosystems interacts with local, regional, and global drivers to shape productivity, biogeochemistry, and ecological dynamics. This dissertation examines patterns and drivers of nutrient limitation, water quality, and stoichiometric variability across freshwater environments using diverse datasets and analytical approaches. In Chapter 1, U.S. lake survey data show that nitrogen and phosphorus co-limitation is widespread and increasing, challenging nutrient management strategies that focus on single-nutrient control. Chapter 2 highlights the ecological consequences of spatial and temporal heterogeneity in a cyanobacteria-dominated reservoir, where bloom dynamics were driven by seasonal shifts in physical limnology and hydrology. In Chapter 3, I examine nutrient patterns in a glacier-fed headwater network, showing how lakes and streams play complementary roles in nutrient retention and export, with hydrology modulating their biogeochemical function. Chapter 4 presents a global synthesis of seston stoichiometry across lentic and lotic ecosystems, revealing distinct biogeochemical signatures and supporting the biogeochemical mosaic hypothesis, which emphasizes the spatial and temporal patchiness of elemental processing. Together, these studies advance understanding of nutrient dynamics across ecosystem types and scales, and underscore the importance of integrating lakes and streams in stoichiometric and biogeochemical research. By combining local monitoring with broad-scale syntheses, this work offers new insight into freshwater nutrient dynamics and their responses to environmental change, insights that are critical for forecasting ecological outcomes and informing effective nutrient management.
