This dissertation seeks to explore elements of praxis in social justice oriented community work. An invitation to organizers, educators, facilitators, researchers and community members at large, this work aims to combat current polarization and share strategies for large, diverse communities to build solutions and scaffold change. This three article dissertation includes both practical tools and values-driven orientations for critically engaged community work. In the first article, polarity mapping is used to describe unresolvable problems in peer-led racial justice affinity and accountability groups before imagining ways to manage these tensions and more effectively achieve the goals of the participants and facilitators. In the second article, appreciative inquiry is used iteratively to support a municipal Neighborhood Association program in evaluation and restructure to better support goals of increasing a sense of belonging, inclusion, and equitable access to resources. The final article builds off of the collaborative tools used in the first two articles to develop a taxonomy of ethical research practices for critically engaged community researchers. This article also identifies values that support praxis. In the fifth chapter of this dissertation, the reader is invited to develop their own praxis more intentionally with guided reflexive exercises using journaling, conversation, somatic movement, and visual arts processes. The conclusion of this dissertation incorporates the author's artwork as an example of the way the findings from this research might live beyond the bookshelf in the real world.
