Human activities have heavily impacted the ecosystem's extent, structure, and function. Most of the solutions for conservation implemented by society involve the benefits of understanding, quantification, and decision-making on the ground. The vegetation covering terrestrial ecosystems regulates water regulation and quality and provides habitat and resources for all animal species. Vegetation lost during recent decades has led to several biogeochemical and biological cycles. Even when vegetation can't produce water, it regulates their fluxes through the ecosystems. On the other hand, most endangered species have been classified as that mainly because of habitat loss, primarily due to the transformation of natural vegetation. Decisions and policymakers must understand the relevance and benefits of conserving natural ecosystems. During this research, I investigated the effects of forests on water and animal habitats, and I developed a set of informatic tools that help different audiences understand and inform conservation decisions. Along the three chapters, I answered questions regarding a) the influence of forests in water quantities, b) the official and government use of riparian forests as a proxy for monitoring habitat quality and habitat, and c) the corridor mapping and prioritization to connect animals among remaining landscape habitats. My findings and developed informatics tools point to quantifying human perceived benefits from conservation and easily identify areas that require more protection.
