This dissertation encapsulates the vast amount of research, studies, and policy that have been devoted to the topics of sustainable development and education for sustainability. The research study sought to answer the research question: how can a district-wide sustainability committee be used to remove communication barriers communication barrier between various Board of Education departments and offices in order to shift towards an education for sustainability model? The dissertation provides case studies and interviews from various public education districts across the United States as well as survey data from the research study conducted in a single K-12 district in Maryland. Findings are discussed on the effectiveness of the change idea and provides researched-based recommendations for the district to pursue moving forward.
