Rigid solids, from everyday objects to engineered structures, interact dynamically with fluids and with each other in ways both familiar and surprising. Birds soar effortlessly through the sky, fish propel themselves through water, and children play with hula hoops - each demonstrating fundamental mechanics that govern motion. Even something as simple as drinking from a straw reveals deep physical principles. These seemingly straightforward and ordinary phenomena serve as gateways to scientific inquiry, where stripping away extraneous details exposes the core mechanics at play. This thesis explores a series of such examples, drawing from mathematics, physics, and engineering to investigate the interplay between solids and fluids. Each chapter examines a deceptively simple physical scenario and leverages it to reveal new insights into fundamental solid and fluid mechanics, developing novel mathematical and experimental methods in the process. We begin in Chapter 2 by characterizing pipe flows in an intermediate regime of length and Reynolds number, where classical theories for extreme cases break down. We show that drinking through a straw exemplifies the full complexity of pipe flow, engaging all terms and couplings in the governing fluid equations. In Chapter 3, we transition from internal to external flows, identifying and characterizing equilibrium flight states of free-falling thin plates with arbitrary mass distributions in fluids of varying material properties. Chapter 4 extends this analysis to investigate how thin plates respond to driven heaving motions. In Chapter 5, we continue with themes of propelled locomotion, characterizing the emergent dynamics of a free-flying cylindrical rotor immersed in viscous Newtonian fluid. Finally, in Chapter 6, we explore a unique form of mechanical levitation, analyzing the motion of a thin circular hoop rolling around a gyrating body - more commonly recognized as a hula hoop. The findings in this thesis offer fresh perspectives on several simple yet poorly understood solid and fluid mechanical systems. These results may inspire applications ranging from flow laminarizers and vascular flow modeling to the design of efficient biomimetic gliders, energy-harnessing robotic systems, and novel methods for manipulating objects without direct gripping.
