This dissertation, "Representing the Gaps: Language Relations in the Writing of Berger, Scego, Lahiri, and Kaygusuz," explores how contemporary writers find ways to represent the gaps in language relations. These histories typically resist clear representation because they have been marginalized, repressed, erased, or absorbed by standard national histories conditioned by the dominance of national narratives. This dissertation examines how four writers in English, Italian, and Turkish experiment with representational approaches to account for gaps in standard narratives and languages in narrative works published from 1975 to 2019.The work of this dissertation follows scholars of translation studies, nationalisms, visual culture, and postcolonial studies in its attention to three distinct historical contexts: Europe during the formation of its economic community that depended on labor migration from the margins of the continent; postcolonial Italy; and republican Turkey. These three contexts call for flexible methods at different times since the particular political structures have created different kinds of erasure between subjects and national languages. A temporality of metropolitan European asserts itself through the importing of migrant labor during the 1950s-1970s rendering other temporalities untranslatable; a linguistic, racial, and classical identity motivates an italianita (Italianness) through Italian colonialism that then becomes erased; and a Turkified nation imposes itself upon a multicultural and multilingual Anatolia through modern Turkish language reforms that erase marginalized languages. This dissertation traces a common gap made among these histories between subjects and linguistic representation. The authors that feature in this dissertation therefore engage in their own representational projects to cast light on those gaps, and to provide opportunities to represent them through what I read as visual and linguistic interplay: radial, baroque, and elliptical narrative approaches. This attention to authors' narrative practices makes its primary contribution to translation studies as a field that constantly mediates between general theories of translatability and their impact on representation, and particular relations between national language structures and their others. Through my consideration of three primary case studies, I offer a theory of narrative representation that enables authors to simultaneously make historical silences visible and open up new representational space.
