This dissertation offers participatory action research on how activist discourses emerge, become counterpublics, and organize into student movements. It features a thick description and deep analysis of "Racial Consciousness 101" (RC101)-a grassroots antiracist movement incubator and consciousness-raising program at Miami University that students of color led with me as collaborators and co-researchers in their pursuit of self-determination. These students used experiential knowledge, community research, and public performances to build intercultural communication, coalitional community, and cross-cultural understanding. Most active from 2018 to 2021, RC101 is a fitting case study with which to build a comprehensive conceptual framework and organizing methodology for an anti-racist counterpublic rhetoric of social movement. This project, after all, very much undertakes the task of building critical memory. For, it offers thick description and analysis of the community organizing so often unwritten, left behind, and/or forgotten. This description and analysis includes primary research data from field notes, surveys, interviews, archives, syllabi, media, institutional reports, and disciplinary statements. Supplemented with secondary research in public sphere, social movement, critical race, and feminist theories, the dissertation ultimately illustrates how institutionalized discourses, genres, and methods alone cannot solve institutional problems. In response, I offer a community organizing methodology with rhetorical methods for building discourses, coalitions, and movements in the institutional public spheres of colleges and universities.
