This dissertation focuses on the kenning, one of the more salient structures in early Germanic poetry. It takes an inter-linguistic approach to the phenomenon, considering the usage of kennings in Old Norse, Old English and Old Saxon. It makes three main arguments with respect to these structures: First, kennings have often been approached as mnemonic devices, formulas created by the oral cultures in which they emerged to store information in an easily-recallable manner. This accounts for some of the unusual attributes these structures display, but not others. This dissertation builds on earlier oral theory by using Koch & Oesterreicher's 1986 framework of Sprache der Distanz - Sprache der Nahe, which breaks down the orality/literary binary proposed by Ong. This allows for the situation of these phenomena in a more specific socio-linguistic context, which in turn provides a clearer understanding of their cultural role. Second, kennings have often been defined as structures that are specifically metaphorical, metonymic or circumlocutory in nature. This dissertation argues that such definitions neither accurately define the kenning nor explicate the ways in which kennings were used, arguing instead that kennings can be distinguished by the abstractive language they employ, which is used to render familiar concepts in unfamiliar terms. Finally, this dissertation argues that kennings (and many of their stranger features) are the result of linguistic play. In making this claim, the paper uses the anthropological framework of "play" as a "frame of activity", first put forward by Stephen Miller in his 1978 article Ends, Means and Galumphing. The recognition that kennings represent a type of linguistic play illuminates the way they function and also suggests new possibilities for the origins of these structures.
