Many interpreters have observed and explored the theme of restoration in Ezekiel. Although scholars agree that restoration is present in Ezekiel, they disagree on the scope and nature of Ezekiel's restoration program. Some scholars see Ezekiel's restoration program as an extension of judgment (Schwarz, Sulzbach), while others interpret Ezekiel's restoration language as a promise of future blessings to the people and the land (Strong, Cook). Furthermore, there is little agreement as to the elements that constitute this restoration, their possible interrelation, and their relation to the divine רוח. Consequently, it remains unclear how the various restoration elements in Ezekiel's restoration program correspond to each other and how they interrelate. This dissertation advances the thesis that Ezekiel's restoration program consists of seven elements that interrelate much like the pieces of a mosaic. Using cognitive linguistics, it explores the contextual domains of these restoration elements to see how their meaning and interrelation reveal the scope and presentation of Ezekiel's restoration program. Additionally, it explores the role of the רוח in Ezekiel's restoration program and how it interrelates with the seven elements of restoration. This study yields several conclusions that advance the ongoing debates concerning Ezekiel's restoration program. First, Ezekiel 34-48 presents a permanent superlative restoration that corresponds to Yahweh's judgment on Israel in 1-24. Israel's condition of exile is not merely reversed, but the land, the people, and their relationship with Yahweh is greatly improved. Second, the interrelation between the several elements of restoration guarantees the permanency of Israel's restoration. Third, the רוח is involved as an agent in each of the seven elements of restoration, which makes him the cause of Israel's future restoration. These conclusions promise to enrich scholarly discussion of Ezekiel by shedding light on the holistic nature of Ezekiel's restoration program, its organic relation to numerous themes in the book, and the value of cognitive linguistics for biblical interpretation.
