The current review examined Mandarin-speaking children's early language development, focusing on semantic, morphological and syntactic development. It is structured into a scoping review followed by a systematic review, leveraging the evidence retrieved from systematic search strategies. Data consisted of 30 studies that met the inclusionary and exclusionary criteria, with an emphasis on measurable and observable production data for children ages 1 to 5 years in mainland China. The scoping review identified the nature, characteristic and distribution of the existing literature, drawing attention to key research concepts, language targets, production data mapped by ages. The studies were grouped by primary focuses accompanied with frequency counts: 10 studies on semantics, 9 on syntax, and 11 on morphology. The systematic review synthesized the evidence to address specific questions regarding children's early language development, such as the semantic acquisition of different verb types, the usage patterns of nouns versus verbs, the acquisition of classifiers, types of negations, expression of temporality and the structural expansion from simple to complex utterances. In sum, this review features a broad coverage, serving as a foundational guideline for the research and clinical practice of Mandarin child language development.
