Acquisition of L2/Ln not only enhances intercultural communication but also prompts an exploration of student motivation within the context of the Expectancy-Value Theory (EVT). EVT posits that individuals' actions are shaped by their anticipated success and personal valuation of outcomes, creating motivation to persist in activities. The challenge to the motivation for ASL learning is that the acquisition of ASL occurs in a different modality than most students' L1. This study employs EVT to explore motivation to persist in the second language (L2) learning of ASL by evaluating the strength and importance of predictor variables in an outcome-predictor relationship using multiple regression analysis. The five predictor categories are: Expectations of Success, Attainment Value, Intrinsic Value, Utility Value, and Effect Cost. Those predictor categories provide insight on diverse aspects of human motivation. The elements of human motivation include self-confidence, individual importance, intrinsic satisfaction, alignment with objectives, and perceived commitment. This investigation examines which predictor categories contribute to motivation and persistence in advanced ASL coursework registration. The study's results can help educators improve motivation, persistence, and achievement in ASL language learning.
