Research on social networks - the interactions individuals share with others - has shed important light in helping explain differential use of variable linguistic forms, both in first (L1s) and second languages (L2s; e.g., Kennedy Terry, 2017; Milroy, 1987; Sharma & Dodsworth, 2020). Investigations of L2 populations have tended to focus on the acquisition of standard language varieties. Addressing this gap, I turn the focus to international residents and students living/sojourning in the under-studied Region of Murcia, Spain, and the extent to which these individuals select local, nonstandard variants in L2 Spanish. Murcian Spanish differs from the more standard Peninsular Spanish in its phonology, morphology, and lexicon. For instance, speakers from this area will most likely palatalize diminutive endings, producing animalico instead of animalito 'little animal' (Hernandez Hurtado & Kanwit, 2024; Hernandez-Campoy, 2008). The current study focuses on whether L2 international residents and students living in the Region of Murcia become aware of salient regional features of MuSp and how their SNs may correlate with such variation. This study triangulates across three tasks - recognition, production, and preference - addressing both lexicon and morphology in the investigation of MuSp features. Among other variables, the effects of origin and identity are considered, along with demographic characteristics of participants' reported local interactants.Ninety participants (31 residents and 59 students) living in the Region demonstrated regional lexical preference (residents 27.7%, students 24.5%) and limited production (residents 5.8%, students 1.5%). Similarly, on the morphological side, the palatalized diminutive -ico was also present in responses: preference (residents 25.8%, students 11.1%) and production (residents 10.5%, students 3.8%). Social Network Analysis provided information about participants' relationships with their interactants. Generally, when participants were more culturally immersed (i.e., had more Murcian alters [relationships]) they produced and preferred more regional features. The first systematic account of the acquisition of L2 Spanish lexicon and morphology in the Region of Murcia, this project contributes to the knowledge of the acquisition of variation by L2 speakers, exploring how stigmatized varieties may affect the L2 development of sociolinguistic variation. Results illuminate the roles of immersion and SNs in language acquisition, especially for understudied and marginalized varieties.
