This dissertation explored the potential effects of digital game-based language learning on language learner identity. Using Gee's (2014) Unified Discourse Theory as a framework for identity work in video games, this study focused on the effects of specific affordances and game mechanics in Lingo Legend, a digital role-playing game designed specifically for language learning, on the language learner identities of six participants. These participants varied greatly in terms of their skill as gamers as well as their linguistic backgrounds, although all did report having experience in formal language classrooms. Through a combination of an initial survey and semi-structured interviews, this dissertation adds to the existing literature on DGBLL, language learner identity, and second language acquisition. The findings of this study indicated that 1) participants felt that they were able to create and develop a positive, protected language learner identity by using the created avatar as a shield against any negative repercussions for mistakes; 2) the progress tracking system and instant feedback helped participants to perceive greater change in their language learning progress, 3) language learners who felt anxious about language learning and/or had powerful negative language learning experiences reported the greatest change in language learner identity; and 4) previous gaming experience strongly affected how well players could interact with and identify the affordances available in Lingo Legend. These implications speak to the unique affordances of video games and DGBLL as supplementary tools for language learning, particularly for learners with low self-confidence in their language learning abilities. They also speak to specific game mechanics that could be incorporated into future language learning RPGs as the video game industry continues to grow. This could greatly benefit not only language learners, but also language instructors, schools, and game developers.
