Like many early Germanic alliterative poems, the ninth-century Old Saxon Heliand makes recurrent use of noun periphrasis, a poetic device that renames a substantival referent term, often in a vivid or evocative manner. Noun periphrasis not only helps poets to fulfill the compositional demands of early Germanic alliterative meter; it also provides characterization and stylistic color for the referent term it replaces or redundantly renames. This dissertation project offers a system that identifies and categorizes the features of nominal periphrasis in Heliand. The system focuses on three major analytical dimensions: 1) syntactic positioning relative to antecedent terms, 2) morphological structure and lexical types of word components, and 3) rhetorical modality. For each of these categories, I propose a series of descriptive tags that identify particular characteristics found in examples of Old Saxon periphrasis. When these tags are applied to the numerous instances of periphrasis in the poem, patterns emerge that reveal both the general compositional conventions associated with this device and the particular stylistic affinities of the Heliand-poet. As compared to many similar constructions in other early Germanic corpora, noun periphrases in Heliand usually manifest as structurally uncomplicated, accurately descriptive variations of an antecedent noun term. Consistent with the goals asserted in the Praefatio of the poem, the transparent nature of noun periphrasis in Heliand along all three major analytical dimensions implies that the poet employs this traditional device toward evangelistic and accommodative ends as opposed to aesthetic, whimsical, or obscurant ones.
