The research question underlying the study was: What are the experiences of U.S. high school German teachers regarding the use of music in instruction? Based on the theory of multiple intelligences, specifically the concept of musical intelligence, the study sought to fill a gap in the current research. While the use of music in foreign language instruction, including its benefits and teachers' perceptions, has been well documented, studies focusing on German as a foreign language in general and in U.S. high schools specifically have been lacking. The researcher utilized a qualitative methodology, with semi-structured interviews for data collection and member checking to ensure trustworthiness. The population included teachers of German as a foreign language in high school in the USA, with a sample of 12 participants. The data analysis consisted of examining the interview transcripts for themes according to qualitative methods. Four themes emerged. Theme 1 was a variety of music. The study found that U.S. high school German teachers use many types of authentic songs, mainly pop music, as well as pedagogical songs. Theme 2 was that music had language learning benefits. All participants considered music to be an efficient tool to teach linguistic concepts such as vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. Theme 3 was that music had cultural benefits. Participants utilized music for cultural purposes, including improving classroom culture and reducing foreign language anxiety, as well as to teach students about German traditional as well as diverse modern culture. Theme 4 was the need for curricular materials. Participants expressed the need for a comprehensive library of appropriate songs with ready-made instructional materials for use in the classroom. Overall, teachers described using music in the classroom as a positive experience.
