For several decades, music education researchers have been investigating the exclusivity of music curricula in secondary education (Choate, 1967; Elpus & Abril, 2019; Henley, 2015; Williams, 2007; Williams, 2011). Elpus and Abril (2019) reported that secondary music education courses are reaching a relatively small number of students serving only 20% of high school students. Researchers have offered suggestions that include reframing what it means to make music (Kratus, 2007; Williams, 2011), expanding topical offerings in music classes (Gulish, 2014; Kratus, 2007; Randles; 2013, Williams, 2011), examining how music is made outside of the classroom (Gulish, 2014; Kratus, 2007; Williams, 2011), and offering multiple points of entry to music programs (Pendergast, 2020). An area of education that has not been considered for inclusion in secondary music curricula is music administration. To address this, the purpose of this study was to document and examine the experiences of participants involved in a high school music administration class, Marketing Musikfest (MM). The following questions guided this research:1.How do participants describe their experiences in the MM class?2.What benefits and challenges are experienced by participants in the MM class?3.Who does this class attract from the student population and why?I used a single embedded case study design (Yin, 2018) to understand the experiences of the participants who take part in the course at two high schools in Pennsylvania. Marketing Musikfest is a course offered in the high schools' business departments that allow students to work with professional music administrators from a local non-profit organization, ArtsQuest (AQ). Students examine and experience how music administrators identify, program, market, and execute performances at Musikfest, a music festival hosted in Bethlehem, PA and organized by AQ. Musikfest is the largest and longest-running free music festival in the United States. Participants in this study included students, teachers, and an administrator from the two high schools as well an arts administrator from AQ. The case was bound to include all participants in the MM course during the spring of 2024. The subunits were the two schools. The course was selected for examination because it is a "deviant" or unique case, indicating that the field of music education would learn much from "highly unusual manifestations of the phenomenon of interest" (Miles & Huberman, 1994, p. 8).Data collection took place from January to May 2024 in a spiral process (Creswell & Poth, 2018, p. 185) and included participant interviews, observations of two high school MM classes over ten weeks, and the collection of artifacts including participant photos and videos as well as curricular documents pertaining to the MM course. Four themes emerged from analysis: the valuing of musical inclusion, the valuing of civic engagement, the valuing of real-life experiences, and the valuing of a unique class experience. Examinations through the framework for the design and implementation of service-learning (SL) courses (Whitley, 2014) highlight how experiential learning can effectively engage students in music administration education and why continued study of music administration topics in music education are important for informing current and future music education practices.
