Inhibitory control as a mechanism of lexical selection during bilingual language processing is a topic long debated. Cognates (i.e. words with the same orthographic and semantic representation across two or more languages) have been valuable in studying how bilinguals navigate communication while controlling multiple languages. This study explores the neural response of translating false cognates (i.e. words similar in form across languages but different in meaning). False cognates hold the potential to further understand the neural basis of bilingual translative processes as both languages are activated simultaneously, which would challenge an inhibitory control a mechanism to properly translate. To test this, event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded as English/Spanish bilinguals performed a verbal translation-production task of words visually presented to them on a computer monitor. English and Spanish words are presented individually in random order. Stimuli consist of cognates, false cognates, and non-cognates. We obtained the well-established cognate facilitation effect of a significantly reduced N400 response to cognates compared to other conditions. While false cognates did prove to be the most difficult condition to translate as reflected in behavioral data, the N400 did not significantly differ for false cognates compared to regular translatable words (non-cognates). However, in later time-windows false cognates did significantly trend more negative than non-cognates, as a result of potential interference, necessitating further investigation.
