With the increase of linguistically diverse students entering the education system, it has become essential for teachers to understand their perceptions of students who are classified as English learners(ELs). English learners are the fastest-growing student population in U.S. schools (National Center for Education Statistics, 2022). This increase has suburban school districts struggling to keep up with the professional development needed to include ELsin their programming. Through the lens of Bandura's(1986) Social Cognitive Theory as well asthe Collaborative for Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) competenciesthis qualitative case study examined the perceptions of middle school teachers concerning the inclusion of ELs in social and emotional lessons. Social and emotional learning is a process through which students learn skills to support healthy development and relationships. Teachers have the responsibility to include all students in lessons that are essential for creating an educational environment that provides all students with the same opportunity including social and emotional learning. The research findings indicate that teachers find building relationships with ELs through SEL lessons challenging and time-consuming. Based on these findings, recommendations focus on understanding the need for culturally responsive teaching during SEL lessons as well as professional development that addresses the need to understand teacher perceptions with a focus on the social and emotional learning of English learners. This study is paramount to creating a socially just classroom environment for all students because it creates an opportunity for teachers to discuss the challenges and support they need to include ELs.
